As a user, in the "Issues in Epic" area, I would like to filter open stories only so when stories list becomes large, it is easier to see what is relevant.
Is there any filter/control available like it is in subtasks case ?

There isn't an option like sub-task.
There is the option of filter in the issue navigator inputting a jql.
Epic = {epic name} and issuetype=story and status not in (closed)
