Restoring Jira from backup - Will it clear out existing data?

Hi,

If I were to restore JIRA from an xml backup (I am trying to upgrade from 4.2 to 4.4), will the existing issues and information on JIRA 4.4 be cleared out?

I had used 4.4 for testing, and I am wondering if the restore will clear it out, or if I need to manually purge the data in the instance.
