Something close to this is a 'Sub-Task' issue type which will be displayed on a parent issue with status of each with a check icon if it's done. Try it and see if it works for you.

We don't have Sub-Task issue type in our setup so that's not an option. Anyway, I'm looking for something very lightweight, like the referenced GitHub or Bitbucket (BB has lightweight tasks in pull requests).

That is a separate field. What GitHub / Bitbucket provide is the ability to put checkboxes right in the main text.
