Time between status in JQL or similar

Question

Hi everyone!

I've been searching on how to calculate and report average time between status A and status B or  maybe time in status A over a certain group of filtered jira issues.

I've found some other posts with answers like "check this or that plugin".

But I'd like to know is ... where can I start to see how to do it for myself ?

In fact I want to learn how to make more complex kind of searches that involve more data than just the "header fields" of an issue.

Sorry but Jira does not contain a ready report for this purpose. JQL is a query language but it is NOT like SQL. It can't do calculations, only filtering. JQL is a simplified version of the WHERE clause of SQL. And as a resultset, you can only get a table showing field values of issues.

For Jira Server and DataCenter, you have two manual options:

First, you can use the REST API to query the change history for each issue and do the calculation yourself.

Second, since you are on an on-prem Jira, you can try to get the same data from the DB directly and once again, do the calculation yourself.

In either case, you will be getting field value changes and the dates of those changes. The rest is up to you.

Time in Status does all the things I've explained above, for you. It allows you to see how much time each issue spent on each status or assigned to each assignee as well as entry/exit dates for all statuses. You can calculate averages and sums of those durations and count grouped by issue fields you select. (For example see the total InProgress time per Epic, or average ToDo time per issuetype). You can also combine statuses into consolidated columns to see metrics like Ticket Age, Cycle Time or Lead Time.

The info is implicitly available inside Jira and you can get it for each issue over Jira rest api as below. Then you need to parse the response, extract the data and make your calculation.

Or, you can try Marketplace apps which do the parsing and calculation for you. You can try Status Time app developed by our team at Bloompeak. It provides reports on how much time spent on each status as well as status entry dates.

Once you enter your working calendar into the app, it takes your working schedule into account too. That is, "In Progress" time of an issue opened on Friday at 5 PM and closed on Monday at 9 AM, will be a few hours rather than 3 days. It has various other reports like assignee time, status entry dates, average/sum reports(eg. average in progress time per project).

Hello @fobrutsky

You can try Time between statuses add-on, which shows the time between statuses. To get the average value, you only need to export the report and get the average value calculation.
