Renew license

Hello,

For a new Jira instance, we would like to know if it is necessary to renew license every years.

I know that renewing license gives maintenance support, but what I need to know if it is possible to continue with the first license acquired the following years without renewing it.

If this is possible, what disadvantages are there?
