Track time an issue spent in each status

Question

I want to track the time an issue spends in each of the status. I know that there are a few add-ons that provide this kind of utility but i'm interested in developing the plugin myself considering the fact that all the available add-ons are really expensive.

All i want from the plugin is that it displays extra columns for each of the statuses (mentioning the time spent on these statuses) in the reports that i generate using simple search filters.

Can anyone please point me in the right direction so that it could help me get started with this?

p.s. i'm new to jira plugin development.

Yes, i'm working on Jira Server.

I started working on the development. So far, i'm able to make simple plugins but if i could get a more pointers (which components to use and how) on how i can make the specific plugin i mentioned, that would be great.
