How can we use the Time to Resolution field in Jira Software?

I know the Time to Resolution field is created by Jira Service Desk but it says it can be used for any projects in the field context. I tried adding it to a software project but it doesn't seem to work there.

Is there a way to use this field in software projects, or is there a workaround to get the same result in a software project to see Time to Resolution on stories?

@Rachel Brenner if you use boards, you can see how long a certain issue is in that column:

You need to go to your board settings > card layout > days in column.

Alternatively since you use Jira Cloud, you can add a new custom field 'Time to resolution' that you fill in automatically when you resolve an issue. You can compute the days from created till resolved with smart values {{now.diff(issue.created).days}}.

As a solution to this problem, I would recommend our product SLA Time and Report. This addon helps to set SLA timer for tasks with Jira Software and Jira Core. Specify SLA you can with flexible Start/Stop/Pause conditions according to your custom fields.
Also, you can track your time to SLAs on each issue panel and easily generate calculated reports.

Oh ok Thanks for your response. I hope Jira changes this at some point, it would be extremely useful for reporting and improvement of processes to see roadblocks.

Is there a custom field that can be used to calculate it in some way? Number of days from one status to another or something like that?

For reporting you can always use the created date of the issue to look up issues that are not in status closed and have been created more than 5 days ago

Thank you, I think that last suggestion could maybe work! I have the card layout showing time in each status but it's more to see generally how long people are taking to finish a task. Thank you, will try this out!
