Resolution Field - Make available on Edit without being required

How do you enable the Resolution field without it being a required field on create and edit, but an available field to edit when closing an issue? Is this within the workflow transitions? I cannot locate documentation or help, other than the fact that the Resolution field is required and an old Jira request to make the field not required is going nowhere.

Resolution is a special field in Jira and is always required and its initial value is 'Unresolved' and cannot be set to optional, there are built-in functionality in Jira that uses this field. You should only add the field to a transition screen when you want to set it or use a post function in your workflow.

That worked charmingly. I still cannot edit the Resolution field in Edit mode without adding to screen and making required when creating or editing when not done. Would the solution be to create a won'tfix post function with a different status?

You should only set the resolution when needed. If an issue has the resolution set, Jira consider that the lifecycle of the issue has reached the end. Please see Best practices on using the "Resolution" field for more information.

I'm having the same issue. I followed the steps in the Jira issues need a resolution link provided above. I reviewed the steps and followed the steps again. Regardless of what I select in the resolution screen, it sets the resolution to done.

I had to remove the first step of the POST FUNCTIONS to "Set the resolution to 'DONE'" to get this to work.

Not sure why the next gen project lets me set the resolution in the edit screen but we have to configure an extra step in this project.
