jql search for empty custom date field

I have created a custom date field.

I would like to do a jql search on issue where the date field doesn't have a date set.

 

Where a date is set I can use jql:  "customfield" is not empty and issues are returned

but jql: "customfield" is empty   OR "customfield" = empty doesn't work, and no issues are listed.

Is there a way to successfully query an empty custom date field?

If yes, please provide jql

I wonder if this is a limitation in server? I can successfully search ‘custom date is empty” in Cloud.
