Permissions in Program Board

Question

We're gearing up for our first big planning sessions for the next quarter since adopting Jira Align, and I've run into a small hiccup that's hopefully easy to answer. After digging through all the documentation, I can't pin down: what permission setting is needed to let someone set the Team Target Completion Iterations on a Feature when viewing them on the Program Board? I just want to make sure ahead of time that the people we're expecting to do that configuration have the right permissions. Thanks!

They need the Program Board toggle turned on for their system role.

You can change it under Administration -> Roles -> Standard Roles -> Select a role from the drop down -> + Program (or whatever you named the Program level) -> Manage -> Program Board (toggle on).

The Program Board is an all or nothing permission in Jira Align right now.

The other thing you want to check is that everyone is assigned to the correct teams (portfolio, program, and team levels). You can do that in Administration -> People -> Select the individual and open their record -> Teams tab -> Add any missing teams to which they need access. In this case, they will need to be assigned to the desired Program Team.

Rights in Jira Align are a combination of both their system role and team membership. The system role gives them access to functionality via the blue left menu. Their team membership gives them access to the data for those teams. (WARNING: If you are a Super Admin, make sure you impersonate a person to see what they see. As a super admin you can see all data by default (although your left menu will be limited by the super admin role settings.)

One additional note: There are two types of roles in Jira Align - system role and team role. This is most relevant at the team level. Your system role gives you access to functionality via the blue menu. Your team role gives you additional rights. For example, only a person assigned as a Product Owner on a specific team (via team role) can accept stories for that team. An individual with a Product Owner system role, but not assigned as a Product Owner on Bravo team, can not accept stories for Bravo team.

Bottom line: For them to have permission to edit the Features detail panel of the Program Board, they will need to be Assigned to the Team of Team team role or Release Train Engineer team role on the Program Team associated to the displayed Program Board, as well as their role having the Program Board toggle turned on for their system role.

Of course, you could always make them a Super Admin, which gives them access to everything. :-)
