Workflow Configuration Conditon vs Validator

He everybody,

 

I have a question regarding workflows. I want a specific project role bee able to see there‘s a transition, but they shouldn’t be able to perform this.

in my understanding I‘d work with a condition and exclude this role. But I’ve seen there‘s also an User in Project Role Validator.

Now I‘m confused. What’s the difference of this option? When do I use the condition with users and when a Validator on users?

Hi Hannes, 

The difference between Conditions and Validators did some getting used to for me, too. Here's my take on it:

A Condition will hide a transition from the user, so that they do not even see that they cannot perform a specific transition. 

A Validator on the other hand will let the user see and attempt to perform the transition before it is tested. This is very useful if you have transition screens, for example letting a user comment on an issue or assign it. Since the validator will be tested only after the transition screen, you could check any data that was entered during the transition.

So, in your in use-case you'll want a Validator. It does not hide the transition, but will not let someone who isn't in the right role perform it.
