Is it possible to force a specific format for the username?

This question is in reference to Atlassian Documentation: Enabling public signup and CAPTCHA

In the signup form (or user creation form), is there a way to check that the username has a particular format? e.g. matches a regex like [a-zA-Z0-9]{3,12}
