Difference Between Search Box And Filter Search

So, when I search in Jira using the search box in the top menu bar for the term "SD-WAN", I get no hits. If I execute the search, I get matching results. Why? What is the difference? One would assume it's using the same type of search, but it doesn't seem to be the case.

I think Quick Search is interpreting your query string as an issue key since it begins with an alpha string and a hyphen, whereas a regular search uses the ~ contains text operator.
