Jira (tomcat) is running with HIGH CPU usage and causing application down.

Hi Team,

We are facing continuous high cpu usage and causing the application down. could anyone suggest on the dB config properties lik max , min size propertis ..etc.

we do have 150 custom fields including grid fields and we use clone plus plugin as well.

and the user count would be 200..

what Jira version are you on. Is your Jira accessible from the internet? Did the issue came up suddenly?

Ours is running on 6.2.7 and the issue exists since few months and nowadays its getting down frequently.

Hi,

my first step would be to disable all 3rd-party add ons first & check, if the issue persists.

Think about upgrading to Jira 8 for an easy performance boost.

Check out the free Jira Java Melody addon from the marketplace to get an insight of what might cause the issue.

I understand that you are noticing frequent memory and CPU increase which cause the JIRA application to crash and also you are using Clone Plus App.

To better assist on this issue, I would like some additional details,

- Are you noticing the issue ONLY after installing the Clone Plus App?

- Or after making any custom changes and installing additional Apps, etc.

- Please share your JIRA statistics(Users, groups, Plugins, custom fields, Projects, Issues, Workflows, versions, Issuetypes etc) from the system info page.

- Current DB configuration details ,max and min size

- Server.xml file configured connections i.e max_threads or max_connections

Based on the above information provided, I can review and share my findings to address the JIRA crash issues.

I also like to inform you that, we opened a ticket related to this issue in our support system tool

1. Clone plus was installed long ago there were no issues till some time but i see the CPU usage high in logs when users tries to clone a parent issue with sub tasks ( around 8 or 9) .
2. we do custom changes like adding sub tasks,issue types etc .... but haven't added any third party plugins recently.
3. Users : Around (200 active ) and say 50-100 concurrent users while accessing application.
Groups : 15 AD groups
Plugins : Clone Plus, Idalko Grid, field security, field sync,
Custom Fields : around 170 fields ( 14 grid fields out of 170)
Projects : 8 Active projects
Issues : 765,056
Workflows : 32 workflows
No versions,
Issue Types : 48 issue types
4. Db config properties :

<pool-max-wait>60000</pool-max-wait>

- Available system memory ?

- Are you noticing any error message in the logs when application goes un-responsive? ::; yes we are getting below error message.
Error :
ERROR 1 : [jira.issue.index.DefaultIndexManager] Wait attempt timed out - waited 30000 milliseconds
Error 2 : CPU getting higher when the below thing appears in log.
[customfields.searchers.transformer.AbstractCustomFieldSearchInputTransformer] Searcher customfield_12960 (ExactNumberCustomFieldSearchInputTransformer) tried to search with context it does not exist for. The search context is com.atlassian.jira.issue.search.SearchContextImpl@285e0164[projectCategoryIds=[],projectIds=[],issueTypeIds=[]]
Allocated JVM Details :
Xms: 10 GB
Xmx : 32 GB
Available system memory 64 GB.
I will share the debug logs in a moment . meanwhile can you help us to check with the above info.

I face this trouble for at least 4 years... already contacted Atlassian support, and local consultant partners for on site health check analysis.

Seems the solution is migrate to data center version.

It's possible to have a dedicate node for rest API response.

I'm pretty sure, that you DON'T have the same problem as the author of this question. Or did you contact Bob Swift for support of the clone plus addon, which caused the issue?

Performance related issues are always instance specific and must be examined separately,

Could you elaborate on JAVA and TOMCAT being a problem? What would you suggest? Why didn't you mention the database you use? Could be the real problem, too...

To analyse your problem, I suggest that you create a new question: There're lots of community members eager to look into your problem.

As a starter: Do some baseline measurements from inside Jira (JavaMelody) and outside performance tests (eg. Gatling,...) Based on these baselines it's then much easier to find the bottleneck.
