Jira changes colors of attachments after downloading

Hi,

While working with designers, we realized that Jira is changing colors of attachments in preview mode vs downloaded file.

We checked it and it is not only visual but also changed properties. 

 

Do you know why does it happen and if we can prevent it?

HI Michal,

I understand that you have concerns about image attachments within Jira, and that specifically the preview shown for these attachments does not have the exact same color as the original.

My first thought was that perhaps the problem here was the way in which Jira was creating thumbnail files of image attachments.  However as I investigated this example, that wasn't actually the case here.  The thumbnail of this image was color accurate to the uploaded file.   And the original file can be downloaded from Jira again, and that copy is accurate to the original file uploaded.

I have not found an exact cause of this problem yet.  But I agree that there is something within the way Jira displays these images, and the preview page that is altering the colors in some cases.   I created a new bug ticket for this problem in JRASERVER-69537

I found I could recreate this problem with that image in both 7.13.1 and 8.1.0, but I suspect that this problem is likely to affect a lot of different Jira Server versions both old and new.  The red in that original had a RGB value of 255,0,0 (as red as it gets).  However the preview that Jira displayed has an RGB value of 252,13,27 (still very red but not exactly the same).

I should note that this color alteration (for me) is only happening to the image on the Jira issue and the image in the preview in my testing. The file uploaded to Jira, and the thumbnail Jira created from that original retain the original color values here, and can still be downloaded in tact. 

What steps exactly did you take to download that file from Jira?  It sounds like in your example the downloaded file is altered, but that wasn't the case for me.  For me, only the image displayed on the issue and preview appeared altered.  If I downloaded that file by going to the preview and selecting the download button in the top right corner, the image I downloaded was accurate.

What version of Jira are you using here?

I experimented with seeing if I could alter some css elements on the page itself to see if I could change the way the image was rendered on the page that could preserve the colors seen in the original and/or the thumbnail, but I was not able to find a successful adjustment that showed that image exactly as it was uploaded.
