what can we do with points or is it just for acknowledgement. Im new just trying to get the gist of things.

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

I assume you are referring to the Kudos Points in this community. They are primarily a recognition system for your contributions to the community. You can't use them to "buy" swag, but in some cases swag will be awarded.
