What is happening? I have made separate templates, but when I try to customize one template card it also changes the other one that I made. For example I had a PTO card with dates and what kind of time off etc was being requested. Made a brand new card Template for Contact Information. When I edit the field that duplicate themself the same as the PTO card all of the fields change in both templates and it deleted all the PTO information that was previously collected so I lost all of my data.
Hi there,
Welcome to the Atlassian Community.
What you’re experiencing usually happens when both templates are using the same Custom Fields. In Trello, Custom Fields are board-level fields, not template-level. That means if two template cards use the same field (for example “Date”, “Type of request”, etc.), editing or renaming that field will update it everywhere on the board, including other templates and existing cards. You can refer to this document
To avoid this, you can:
Create separate Custom Fields for each template instead of reusing the same ones.
Give them distinct names (e.g., “PTO Start Date” vs “Contact Phone”).
Attach only the relevant fields to each template card.
Another option is to use different boards if the workflows are very different.
Hope it helps and wish you have a great day.
I was trying to create separate custom fields, but as soon as one template is changed the other template duplicates what the other is doing. Even though they have distinct names they both mirror the original card that I made that no longer exists.
For example I just made a new card and this is what automatically pulls in and if I change it everything on the other two also change.
