Using file for system prompt in RovoDev CLI

Palo Otčenáš November 7, 2025

Is it possible to use some md file for the additionalSystemPrompt in config?

I wanted longer prompt there and whenever I save the config file and run rovodev cli again, it is mingled into a single long multiline "string" that cannot be updated easily

Hey @Palo Otčenáš

At the moment, the Rovo Dev CLI does not support linking or importing an external .md file for the additionalSystemPrompt in the config. The prompt must be entered directly as a single string in the config file. This means that if you paste multi-line text, it will be saved as one long string, which can be hard to edit.

What you can do:

  • Keep your prompt in a separate .md file for easy editing.

  • When you want to update the prompt, copy the content from your .md file and paste it into the additionalSystemPrompt field in the config.

  • Be aware that line breaks will be escaped, so it will appear as a single line in the config.

We'll capture this as a desired feature for our future developments!
