[Closed Beta] Now deploy Jira config changes from your sandbox to a higher environment!

Hello Atlassian Community!

I’m Adithya, Product Manager for Sandboxes at Atlassian. I’m thrilled to announce that, in a closed beta, select Enterprise plan customers can now promote configuration changes made in a sandbox to the sandbox’s production environment or any other sandbox connected to the same production environment with our new Sandbox Config Deployment for Jira feature.

With this, you can:

• Save time and reduce manual work: Automate the deployment of tested configuration changes from sandbox to production, freeing admins from tedious, error-prone replication.

• Minimize risk and errors: Automated comparison, pre-flight checks, and dependency analysis help ensure safe, reliable deployments.

How does the new capability work in the closed beta??

For a selected set of Jira core entities (Screens, workflows, custom fields and more), you can:

⚡ Deploy Selectively: Move only the configurations you need from sandbox to production, whether new additions or strategic modifications.

🔍 Compare Environments: Get clear, side-by-side comparisons between sandbox and production to spot crucial differences instantly.

🎯 Assess Impact: Understand dependencies and potential effects before deployment, ensuring smooth transitions every time.

✅ Validate Changes: Run pre-flight checks to catch issues before they affect your production environment.

📊 Track Outcomes: Receive post-deployment reports with summaries and actionable remediation steps when needed.

Who Can Join the Closed Beta?

We’re looking for participants who:

• Are Jira Cloud admins with org admin permissions

• Are heavy users of sandboxes for regularly testing config changes for Jira

• Are on an Enterprise plan

The closed beta will be launched in December. Participants will get early access, direct engagement with our product team, and the opportunity to shape the future of change management in Atlassian Cloud!

How to Sign Up?

Interested in joining the closed beta? Here’s how:

Step 1: Sign up here: https://earlyaccessprogram.atlassian.net/servicedesk/customer/portal/1089

Step 2: We’ll reach out by the end of November to confirm your participation.

Step 3: Go through the documentation and demo recordings that will be shared with you.

Step 4: Try the feature out once it is enabled for you, and share your feedback with us!

Though we will do our best to accommodate your request, we will have to limit the number of participants in order to provide the highest levels of support during the Closed Beta. However, we will ensure that you are on the waitlist, and get access as soon as we can onboard more users!

Hey @Eglė Kaziulionytė ! We are actively exploring how we can support automations - and though it may not be immediately available during release of Beta, we will continuously work towards enhancing the list of entities and configurations that are supported

And at the same time sharing the concern: if it is a closed beta, what are the risks of creating configuration problems in the production environment, testing this feature?

I assume it would be good to have a cloned site from the prod site, and using that one to promote changes from sandbox.

Thanks! This will also be available to Premium plans in the future. Currently, we are looking for Enterprise plan participants because they have multiple sandboxes per site - which would allow them to test the feature between two sandboxes, before deploying changes to their production. 

In the long term, we are also, actively exploring how we can facilitate a "rollback" of sorts, that would undo config changes caused by a deployment, in case you find the outcome of the deployment to be unsatisfactory. 

I will update the post with more details as we make progress towards that capability. Hope this helps!

Great feature! Something we've been hoping for for a long time!

The closed beta currently mentions Enterprise plan, however will this also be a feature for Premium/Standard? I would hate for this to be yet another Enterprise only feature..

Hey @Dirk Ronsmans ! 

This feature will be available in the future to Premium customers as well. However, since this is a sandbox-only feature, and sandboxes today are not available with Standard Plans, this will not be available to Standard customers.

As you can see, many of us, would love to jump in and join this close beta release, but we are on a Premium plan.

Great to read this improvement. We're using Sandbox with handbrakes on due to missing deployment features for production.

Hello there,

This is amazing news! I'm glad to hear this is also going to be available to Premium customers in the future as well. This will help keep our admins down to a minimum in production and/or make it less of a hassle to transfer configurations. 

Is there an estimated date on when this will become generally available? I have a few users (and myself) that would be itching to use this feature.
