Where do '$DUPLICATE-14e6c' entries come from in the People Directory?

Our Confluence 6.0.7 is linked to Actvie Directory LDAP.

In the People directory appear users withe the Name pattern

$DUPLICATE-xxxxxxx (e.g. $DUPLICATE-14e6c).

Where do they come from?

And

How to get rid of them?
