How to add a blank option to list variables when creating a template

I am creating a space template and have added some variables of the List type. I want to add a blank option to the list variables. In other words, I want the drop down list to have an empty option at the top of the list as the default selection. Is this possible?

I had this issue as well. 

Found that if you make the first value just be three dots, it will count as a blank field and will not let you submit. See number 4
