How accessible is Trello?

Mike Gifford November 3, 2020

I'd like to know what efforts are being made to have Trello meet WCAG 2.1 AA guidelines. Will there be a VPAT for it along with Atlassian's other products https://www.atlassian.com/accessibility

The drag/drop nature of Trello is great for some users, but a real barrier to others. It can be set up to be semantic, but generally isn't.

If we are trying to include more people with disabilities on our team, we're going to need to be able to rely on a product like this to deliver.

Hi Mike,

Good news, we do have a VPAT for Trello. We just haven't been able to get it up on the page that you're referring to. If you'd like to see a copy of this, feel free to reach out to our Support team at https://trello.com/contact and we can provide you this. Hopefully we'll be able to get it up on http://atlassian.com/accessibility very soon too.

Thanks,

Ryan

Thanks Ryan. I'll reach out for the VPAT and looking forward to seeing it up on your /accessibility page soon.

Btw, I'd really love to see all Atlassian software use a common accessibility tag that allows users to identify & search for accessibility issues to see reported issues and work in progress.

A commitment to accessibility is nice, but often it is just words. It's great to see how you've brought it into your design system:

But this is just scratching the surface for the complex tools that you build/maintain.

Accessibility is a journey, and it is important to demonstrate that your team is making your products more accessible every day.

Thanks again for your help.

Has anyone been able to get a VPAT for trello?   If so, is it possible to send it to me? That would be very much appreciated!

Looks like the VPAT is now on the Atlassian Accessibility page.

Unfortunately the VPATs are only available in PDF... these are not accessible for people who use zoom or magnification, and possible for others (I'm not sure how these PDFs perform with screen readers for example).

@Trello: Will you be publishing these VPATs in an accessible format like HTML?

I would say the people who mostly look at VPATs are either accessibility professionals or users who have a disability or impairment and need to check if the product is suitable for them (and in some cases there's overlap since many accessibility professionals have accessibility needs themselves). It's not a good start when the VPAT itself is not accessible.
