Is it possible to run crowd server together with Jira and confluence Data center or am I required to upgrade to Data Center?
Yes, you can. Jira DC and Confluence DC existed even before Crowd DC was first released. Besides the above, from Jira and Confluence's perspective, Crowd's URL is just an URL. It can be the URL of a single Crowd server or the URL of a load-balancer hiding the complexity of multiple Crowd nodes. The thing is, if you don't upgrade to Crowd DC, your Crowd Server will be a Single Point Of Failure (SPOF), which kind of eradicates the advantages of having DC versions for Jira and Confluence.
