Migration without users (or a subset)?

Hey,

will there be a possibility soon to migrate projects to Cloud either without users or only with a selected number of users?

If there is a customer who first wants to migrate e.g. 70 users and not all 2000 users, this causes a problem.

We do have a feature request to migrate only users & groups relevant to the projects you've selected to migrate, do you think this will help you?

I got the same question from one of your colleagues through another channel so will reshare what I wrote there regarding this feature.

The constraint we have to work with is that we must migrate the users and groups that are referenced in the selected project data. If we don't, the project data will face a lot of errors when trying to migrate as it won't have the required @mentions, assignees, reporters etc... 

For MIG-141 Only migrate users & groups relevant to the projects I have selected we are investigating a solution where there might be 2 additional options we add to the Jira Cloud Migration Assistant:

1. Minimise the users and groups needed for the projects you selected ie. the users and groups that participate in the selected project data (@mentions, reporters, assignees etc).
2. Migrate the minimum users & groups as above, but also the users & groups who also need edit/view access, as defined by the permission settings for the selected projects.

Would love to hear your comments on these options and any example use cases that would fit, or any other cases that might not. I can't tell you yet when this will be coming out, other than an update that we have prioritised discovery into this and have a solution in mind. Please vote / watch / comment on the ticket to follow progress.

Right now, Atlassian Support can disable user & group migration for you. We do this manually on a case by case basis as noted on MIG-128 Support migrating data without users/groups where we implemented this as tool for Atlassian Support Engineers. If you’d like to take this route, please mention MIG-128 on your support ticket.

The reason we haven’t put this in the product for self service is that this is a completely manual step that can get messy as and you have to be able to be precise about user & group migrations and be prepared to work through the issues when applying this override.

If I want to migrate one project from a Jira cloud instance, to a new Jira cloud instance and I only want the users associated with that specific project, is there a way to do that? I believe the above method is only for Jira server to cloud migrations.

Thanks for your question. Currently, for migrations between cloud instances, we do not support users and groups scoped only to the projects that are selected.

We understand that this causes significant customer pain and building support for scoped users and groups is high on our priority list.

We expect to start work on this by end of next quarter. It is likely to be included in our updates as we add cloud to cloud migrations to our public roadmap by end of next quarter too.
