How do I create plan level epic without linking to any specific project/team in the plan..

How do I create plan level epic without linking to any specific project/team in the plan..

I created a plan that has two boards pulled into it and created two plan only teams for those two boards.

I would like to create a common epic at the plan level and push it to all the projects under the plan.

For example, my plan is mobile development, and i have two boards "iOS board" and "Android board" as issue sources. Now I would like to create a common epic at plan level as "Document Required Features" and push it down to both boards so they are visible in these boards. Then related user stories will be created at project level linking them to this common epic.  Need some help on how to make this happen?

Hi @Sripriya Srinivasan

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Your Epic would still need to exist in a Jira project somewhere. It cannot only exist within the plan.

Once you decide in what Jira project to create your Epic, you can link items from any other Jira project to the Epic itself.

Assuming your two team boards are tied to two separate Jira projects, you can simply create a third Jira project to contain your cross-functional Epics.

I would also consider adding an additional level of hierarchy above Epics. For example, an Initiative. This way, you could have each team have their own individual epic with their work but then link those epics to the Initiative.

Some additional info on how to configure this: https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/configure-custom-hierarchy-levels-in-advanced-roadmaps/

Hi Josh,

Thank you so much for the quick and detailed response.

Will give it a try !!

So for example in order to create an initiative (higher hierarchy) you need create a specific project for that. Let's say a Program, that way when you create an initiative is tied to that Program that can have epics coming from let's say three Jira Projects to define such initiative that combines epics from the three projects. Is it correct my interpretation for that? Thanks
