Share progress toward the product goal in the sprint review

5 min

By the end of this lesson, you’ll be able to:

  • Define the sprint review as an opportunity to inspect the sprint outcome and plan future adaptations
  • Emphasize that the sprint review is a working session, not just a presentation
  • Recognize that the sprint review is time-boxed to a maximum of four hours (or less) for a one-month sprint (usually shorter in shorter sprints)
  • State that the goal is to showcase a working increment, gather feedback, and update the product backlog
  • Explain that only work meeting the definition of done is included in the session

What is the sprint review?

The purpose of the sprint review is to inspect the outcome of the sprint and determine future adaptations. It is a working session in which the scrum team and stakeholders inspect the product increment and collaborate on what to do next.

The sprint review is the last event of the sprint and should be a maximum of one hour per week of the sprint. For example, a one-month sprint could require a four-hour sprint review (usually shorter for shorter sprints).

Get started with the sprint review

During the event, the scrum team and stakeholders review what was accomplished in the sprint and what has changed in their environment. Unlike a traditional presentation, the sprint review is interactive and focused on feedback and adaptation. It is not just about showing what was done but about discussing progress, challenges, and opportunities.
Based on the information in the demonstration, attendees collaborate on what to do next. They may also adjust the product backlog to meet new opportunities.

To make the most of the sprint review, prepare by ensuring the increment is ready to be demonstrated. Encourage active participation from stakeholders and create an open environment for honest feedback.

Focus on the working product, not on slides or lengthy reports. Use the session to inspect progress and adapt plans collaboratively.

The importance of the sprint review

The sprint review helps ensure transparency and alignment between the scrum team and stakeholders. It fosters collaboration, allowing everyone to inspect and provide valuable feedback.
This feedback is crucial for updating the product backlog, ensuring that the team is always working on the most valuable and relevant items.
