Throwback Thursday: what song frequently gets stuck in your head for way too long? #TBT

Kristján Geir Mathiesen

It's Thursday!

My friend and I had a "video night" last week. We watched Pretty in Pink. What a classic! Well, one of many good songs in the move is "If you leave" by OMD. That is such a great song! Well, it got stuck in my head

Did you know this song was written in under 24 hours?

"The end of the film Pretty in Pink, set in a high school prom, was originally meant to feature the OMD song "Goddess of Love" (which the band released on The Pacific Age later in 1986.) However, director John Hughes decided to change the ending to Pretty in Pink after poor test audience reactions, and felt that the new ending required a song with different lyrical content. Hughes asked OMD for a new song to match the feel of the ending, and also specified that it should be written at a tempo of 120 BPM, to match the speed of "Don't You (Forget About Me)", which the actors in the scene had danced to during filming. This request came two days before OMD were due to begin a tour, and as a result "If You Leave" was written and recorded in under 24 hours."

AMAZING!

Soooo, what song frequently gets stuck in your hear?

Let’s make it a great Thursday!

I had one song in high school that I liked so much that I decided to set it as my alarm ringtone. Let's just say it wasn't the best decision. It started okay, but after a couple of weeks, it started giving me PTSD whenever I heard it. So, do NOT do that to yourself unless you actually want to ruin the song for yourself 😂. Sadly, I can't even remember which one it was (it would seem I purposely erased it from my memory)...

Apart from that, I remember having the Kernkraft 400 melody stuck in my head for a couple of months. I think it was a hit at a festival I went to around that time 🔊

Mine changes all the time, but the one that always comes back is "They don't care about us" by Michael Jackson. 😄 That chorus is so catchy, it sneaks into my head and stays there for days!

Also, I had no idea If You Leave was written in under 24 hours. That's incredibly impressive! Thanks for sharing this fun fact!!

Happy Thursday!

"You" by Candlebox. I have no idea why it is the one that constantly pops in to my head, but is probably related to when and where I may have first heard the song in High School. I saw them in concert (with the Flaming Lips as the opening band) on November 22, 1994 at Roseland Ballroom in NYC. It was a tumultuous time in my life, so I think the song and lyrics got embedded deep in the recesses of my memory and probably resurfaces more often than I wish to admit.

Whenever someone mentions earworms, the "How I met your mother" road trip episode with the cassette that gets stuck and slowly drives everyone insane always comes to my mind.

“I am so sick of this song” — "Don’t worry,it comes around again”

But the ultimate earworm across all genres, eras, and decades has to be Beethoven's "Für Elise".

Don’t ever play it on my piano—at least not unless you can play the whole thing

As a former professional DJ with over 16 years in the industry, I’ve had thousands of songs stuck in my head, some far too explicit for this forum! Despite all those years of spinning records, the one that somehow still ends up looping in my brain is Taio Cruz - 'She's Like A Star'. It’s definitely one of those tracks that just refuses to leave!

...Like a star, a star, a star, a star
She's the only one that I want by my sideShe's the only one that I believe can save my life...

It's a rare moment when I'm not thinking about Jira

I almost always have a song in my head, but the one that crops up with the least prompting and sticks around mort often is the theme song from The Nanny.

My most effective earworm remover is Blister in the Sun by the Violent Femmes.

Kris Klima _K15t_

Most recently... Two Gunslingers by Tom Petty.

Under the most funny circumstances.

@Matt Reiner _K15t_ was teaching me how to use Trello.

Amazed of what and how it does, I said... "I'm taking control of my life" which is a chorus line from the song.

Matt Doar

Many different ones, from different decades of my life. I do have a couple of special ones that I sing to get rid of the other earwormy ones though. Simple melodies and lyrics.

Don't Stop Believin by Journey - one of the best songs ever! I was so lucky to have been to a Journey concert in person when Steve Perry sang this awesome song and we all sang along. As an optimist, I always believe in hope for all good things to happen and this song resonates with me.

May not be the oldest here by any means, but anything by Deftones fits the bill for me personally! Always takes me back.

Anwesha Pan

Beside the trance versions 🔥 of "Wheels on the bus" and "baby shark", currently I am somehow stuck with "Gasolina" as my 2 years keeps saying "mumma lina lina lina song" 😄

Evelin Bayer - codefortynine

@Anwesha Pan: I was thinking of putting "Wheels on the Bus" too, but there's a trance version of it?! 🤯😂

Now I'm curious... and slightly worried it'll get stuck in my head for the rest of the week! 😄

This one is stuck in my head after reading @Anwesha Pan's and @Evelin Bayer - codefortynine's comments

Smart E's - Sesame's Treet (12" Mix)

John Funk

This varies from time to time, but when I hear something usually that I haven't heard in a while, then that sticks for a day or two, and I find myself humming it.

Fats Waller - Louisiana Fairy Tale.

It was the opening for "This Old House" - which apparently I managed to watch enough to get their (old) theme song stuck in my head!

Now that I'm on my 5th year as a Disney World passholder, I try to avoid even walking past the Small World ride, because, once that song gets stuck in my head, I can't get it out.

Anwesha Pan

Oh yes @Evelin Bayer - codefortynine the trance version is so addictive. You can also search by "baby raves" or "toddler techno"

Here is the link though - Wheels on the bus - by DJ Lenny Pearce

He does events as well, which you can attend with your kids and have all the fun.💃🏼💃🏼💃🏼

My favorite song that I always have in my head is Lionel Richie's song, called "Dancing on the Ceiling"

Earworms are the worst!

I'm making a point to not read any of the replies here, otherwise I'll get "infected" with a song I don't need in my mind...

The last song I recall living rent free in my head for a few days? Pink Pony Club, by Chappell Roan🐴 (sing along with me on YouTube!)

Tinker Fadoua - [Seibert US]

"Take on me" - Aha

@Tinker Fadoua - and now it's stuck in my head!

This would be the song that doesn't end and can be stuck in your head for a very long time if you let it....

Don't start it around friends unless you want trouble...
