The default SourceTree diff tool does not work properly for xml files then the xml merging is quite tedious. Which external xml diff tool do you advise, working well with SourceTree ?

I have faces similar issue. Did you try something else then?
You can use Meld. meldmerge.org
On the Source Control option, just open the repository folder and do the compares and merges here.
