I have several boards but the ‘home page’ option just shows an empty space.

It might be that there hasn't been any activity (e.g. comments), cards that are "up next" or have due dates coming up, overdue cards, or cards that require your attention (e.g. you were mentioned in a comment). You can read more about how Trello Home works and the difference between Up Next and Highlights in this article.
