Can you please tell me can you have a shared board, but have certain lists on the board be private? I don't want to have to make two boards with stuff I want to share and stuff I don't want to share for the same project. Thanks!

There's not, unfortunately, a way to make private lists or cards on a board. Anyone who is given access to the board will be able to view all contents. So... you'd need to have a separate board for privacy.
