How can I stage hunks on a UTF-8 file with BOM?

I have a bunch of files that are UTF-8 with BOM. Not sure whether it matters, but they have file extension .rdl

I have added

*.rdl diff

To my .gitattributes file and restarted SourceTree to no avail.

Diff pane says "No changes in this file have been detected, or it is a binary file".

I updated my SourceTree to 2.5.5.0 and the issue has been fixed.
