Hi community,
You can now connect Jira Product Discovery ideas directly to focus areas and proposals in Focus.
Product teams capture and shape ideas in Jira Product Discovery. Leaders track strategic priorities in Focus. Those ideas can now sit on the focus area they support, next to the other work already connected there. The path from idea to focus area to execution is visible in one place, including discovery that has not yet become delivery work.
Where Focus documentation refers to Jira work, that includes Jira Product Discovery ideas.
What’s available
- Choose which spaces to connect: An admin connects Jira Product Discovery to Focus and selects which spaces are in scope. Spaces used for business-as-usual work can stay out of the connection.
- Link ideas to focus areas: Add individual ideas to a focus area. They appear in the work table with the other connected work.
- See the context that matters: A linked idea shows its summary and key, status, owner, target date, idea type, and Jira Product Discovery as the source.
- Filter to ideas: Filter the work table to ideas. Child focus areas that have connected ideas expand automatically, including when you start from a parent focus area.
- Add discovery context to proposals: Link ideas to a proposal for funding or headcount, so reviewers can see the discovery work behind the request.
How to connect ideas
You can link ideas in Focus, with automation, or through the Atlassian MCP Server.
- In Focus: Open the focus area, select the Work tab, and add the idea the same way you add other Jira work. Your admin controls which apps are connected. Steps are in Add work to focus areas.
- With automation: Use the Link to focus areas action to associate ideas with focus areas and keep that connection in sync. Setup is in Use Focus with Jira automations.
- With MCP: The Focus tools on the Atlassian MCP Server include
linkToFocusArea, which connects a Jira Product Discovery idea as a work item. The tool list is in Supported tools.
Who this is for
This is for product teams working in Jira Product Discovery, and for leaders using Focus to decide what to fund and deliver. It helps when you need the discovery behind a priority in the same place as the decision.

Coming soon in Jira Product Discovery
A Focus area field in Jira Product Discovery is coming soon. Product teams will be able to link an idea to one or more focus areas from inside Jira Product Discovery, including on the roadmap, so the strategic reason stays with the idea during prioritization. We’ll share more when it is generally available, but please contact your account representative if you would like to learn more.
Tell us how you’re using it
Try linking ideas to an active focus area, or to a proposal you are preparing. What made the planning conversation clearer? What is still missing when you move between Jira Product Discovery and Focus?
