Hi Admins,
We're excited to announce that, starting this November, the Units open beta will begin rolling out to customers on the Enterprise plan.
Units enable you to give teams access to the data they need while keeping sensitive information away from people who shouldn't see it. You can also hand off parts of the administration to trusted admins, while org admins retain full control of org-wide policies. Let's dive in.
The challenges units solve
We've heard from enterprise customers like you that when your organization spans multiple subsidiaries, business lines, client engagements, or regions, keeping data both separated and organized can be a challenge. To work around this, many of you have set up multiple orgs or sites and relied on permissions to keep information apart. While that helps, multiple orgs and sites can create silos between your teams and increase administration overhead. On the other hand, permissions alone don't always prevent information from appearing to the wrong people via Search or other apps. With the rise of AI, getting data control right matters more than ever. Rovo and AI-powered capabilities deliver real value when they draw from a set of relevant, controlled data, without exposing your users to sensitive information outside of their work.
Additionally, we continue to hear from many admins that while organizations scale, admin teams often stay the same size. This means every new rollout and onboarding request flows through a handful of org admins, who face a tough trade-off between granting people full org admin controls and handling everything themselves, creating an administration bottleneck that slows teams down and blocks innovation.
Units close that gap by keeping the right data in front of the right people without slowing anyone down, and empowering you to scale your admin team safely with the new unit admin role.
How units protect your data and help you move faster
With units, you can divide your Atlassian organization into parts that group the people, apps, and data that need to work together. Each unit has its own Teamwork Graph, enabling Search, Chat, and agents to generate insights based on data within your designated unit. Together, these capabilities help keep your data protected and AI and tools focused.
Here's what that looks like:
- Data stays where it belongs. You define the boundaries so that users and external collaborators can only see the teams, content, and data within their unit. As your business evolves, new users and apps added to the unit automatically inherit its policies, so you don’t have to start from scratch. This empowers you to save time and avoid security gaps by removing the need to manually update users, policies, and configurations, while gaining precise control over data access.
- AI and tools work within context, not across everything. Your teams get the most value out of AI-powered search, chat, and agents when they have access to the right information. Now, this functionality is more powerful than ever: Rovo can now discover and synthesize knowledge across up to five sites. Together, units allow you to break down siloes while protecting your data by allowing your teams access to the data they need within the boundaries you’ve established.
- Administration scales with the org. Units come with a new role, unit admin. Org admins can safely hand off everyday tasks to unit admins, like managing user access, approving apps, and updating settings for their unit. Org admins maintain full visibility and control of org-wide security and policies. That means fewer bottlenecks, faster rollouts, and more time for org admins to focus on what matters most.
Units sit between the organization and site layers. You can create multiple units within an organization and nest multiple sites within a unit to match your business needs.
Ways units can work for your business
Here are a few ways you can put units to work:
- Client-facing work: Create one unit per client so partners and clients see only the teams, content, and data related to that client engagement.
- Regional divisions: Because you can only pick one data residency region per unit, setting up units for each region lets you address compliance and local administration needs without spinning up separate orgs.
- M&A and confidential initiatives: Place confidential work in a dedicated unit with tightly controlled membership, so only the people working on these initiatives can access sensitive information.
- Cloud migration or org consolidation: If you're migrating from the Data Center or simplifying your footprint, you can bring everything into one org and use units to keep the boundaries your teams, regions, or clients need.

When you will get units
We're rolling out the Units open beta to the Enterprise plan customers between now and December 2026. We'll auto-enroll your organization so you don't need to take any action.
Get ready for units
- For organizations with a complex setup, such as multiple sites, we recommend reaching out to your account team or Atlassian Support, where we'll guide you through an assessment to recommend how to structure your organization with units.
- When units are rolled out to your organization, you'll see Units Beta appear in the left navigation bar in Atlassian Administration. We’ll also send you an in-app notification.
- You can enable, view, create, and manage units all within Administration. To ensure a smooth onboarding experience, we're providing a launch guide right in Administration with step-by-step instructions tailored to your organization.
If you don't enable units, nothing changes. Units only create new boundaries within an organization when an org admin enables the feature.
