Hi DevOps Community!
Our yearly Atlassian State of Developer Experience Report for 2026 is out now! This year we heard from 1,500+ developers and engineering leaders about DevEx in the agentic era.
A few findings that stood out:
- 87% of developers say AI helps them ship work faster, but 72% say they experience the same, or even more, friction than before AI
- The biggest sources of friction? It’s still finding information, meetings, and context switching
- 95% of engineering organizations are actively using AI, but only 17% of developers say their organization has a clear, actively implemented AI strategy across the SDLC
- But of developers who do report a clear AI strategy, they’re almost 2x as likely to report less organizational friction
- 64% of leaders say greater AI use correlates with better outcomes, but 59% also worry about performative AI use
- Meanwhile, 41% of developers say they sometimes use AI more than necessary because they feel expected to
As we close 2026, AI adoption is nearly universal, but turning it into a better developer experience still seems like a work in progress.
The rest of this year’s report looks at how leaders can close the gap between adoption and impact: what a clear AI strategy looks like, how to better develop engineering skills in the agentic era, how to better gauge developer productivity (hint: measure outcomes and impact, not AI usage), and more.
