Our Bitbucket self-hosted runner pipeline had been working reliably for approximately three years. Suddenly, the runner started going OFFLINE, without any intentional changes on our side.
We have tried several troubleshooting steps, but the issue persists:
-Upgraded the runner from version 1 to version 7. After the upgrade, it connected successfully and worked for a couple of hours, but then went OFFLINE again.
-Upgraded the host OS to Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS. This did not resolve the issue.
-Confirmed that outbound HTTPS access to https://bitbucket.org/ works correctly. Requests return HTTP 200, and TLS completes successfully.
-Confirmed that connections to https://auth.atlassian.com/ fail during the TLS handshake.
Diagnostic details
The runner logs repeatedly show:
io.netty.handler.ssl.SslHandshakeTimeoutException: handshake timed out after 10000ms
The logs identify the destination as:
auth.atlassian.com/13.227.180.4:443
A host-level curl request to auth.atlassian.com also times out during the TLS handshake, although the TCP connection to port 443 is established. Forcing TLS 1.2 and HTTP/1.1 did not resolve the issue.
We have also reviewed the official Bitbucket runner IP address documentation and tested addresses from the documented ranges. Access to bitbucket.org works, but the authentication endpoint remains unreachable at the TLS handshake stage.
Could you please investigate why the runner can no longer establish a TLS connection to auth.atlassian.com and advise which endpoints and IP ranges must be reachable for a Bitbucket Cloud self-hosted runner to remain online?
