I've been trying to get an automation to send an email to our companies helpdesk. However when I do that it just gets an error stating that "We couldn't send emails to any recipients (there is only one). This may be for data privacy or recipient email accounts configuration reasons."

Do you guys have any ideas?

Hi — that error is almost always about who Automation is allowed to email, not a broken rule.

In Jira Cloud, the Send email action will not send to arbitrary free-text addresses the way a mail client would. Common causes of "We couldn't send emails to any recipients… data privacy or recipient email accounts configuration":

1. Recipient is not a known Atlassian / Jira user (or JSM customer). A helpdesk alias like helpdesk@yourcompany.com that is not tied to a user account is often blocked. Prefer an Atlassian account that owns that mailbox, a JSM customer/request notification path, or Send web request to your helpdesk's inbound API.
2. Actor / privacy settings. Confirm the rule runs as a user allowed to email those people, and check org email / data-residency controls if your admin tightened outbound mail.
3. Empty smart values. If the To field uses a smart value that resolves blank, you get the same error. Try a single hard-coded address first.
4. Audit log. Open the rule's Audit log for the failed run and expand the Send email step — it usually says whether the recipient was rejected as non-user, empty, or blocked by policy.

Practical test: set the recipient to your own Atlassian account email, publish, trigger once. If that works, the rule is fine and the helpdesk address needs to be a real user/customer or a webhook instead of Send email.

If you can paste (redacted) the To field and the audit-log line for that step, we can narrow it to one of the four.
