I know they re there as I added them yesterday from another board

Most of the time this is a filter that's still on. In Trello a filter stays active even after you leave the board or refresh the page. At the top of the board, look for Filter cards. If it shows a filter, click Clear filters, or just press x while the board is open.

If the cards still don't show:
If search doesn't find them either, go to https://trello.com/search and tick Closed boards and archived cards. That covers anything archived, or anything on a board that got closed.
Let me know what you find and we'll go from there.
sorry tried all of this - still not there - i found 3 archived items - clicked on restore but they're not showing either

Could you also check Board menu → Archived items → Switch to lists? An archived list hides its cards too. If you find the relevant list, select Send to Board.
If that doesn’t explain it, try opening the same board in a private/incognito browser window to help rule out a browser issue.
Are you using the Trello app or a browser, and can you still see the list headings?
