Hello!
We are making it easier to connect discovery and roadmaps to execution across your teams. Contributors with Jira license can already link Jira Product Discovery ideas from Jira. With this update Contributors will get a linking permission and will be able to connect discovery to delivery directly from Jira Product Discovery. Until now this was reserved for Creators only.
We will begin rolling out this change on Octover 10, 2026. If your site is on the continuous release track, you can expect the change to reach you in the 2 weeks after rollout starts. If it’s on the bundled release track, it will arrive with your next bundled release.
Why are we doing this?
Bridging the gap between "what we build" and "why we build it" is core to Jira Product Discovery. Customers tell us that connecting discovery to delivery creates a single source of truth for priorities and reasons, and builds transparency and team alignment. That’s why linking must be smooth, and why we now let contributors link Jira work items directly from Jira Product Discovery.
Before
Contributors could link ideas to Jira work items from Jira, but not from Jira Product Discovery.
- They had to switch to Jira to connect delivery work back to discovery context.
- Creators often had to create or update links in JPD on behalf of delivery teams.
- Important context about why something is being built and what is being shipped could be delayed or missed.
After
Contributors with the right Jira access can manage those links directly from Jira Product Discovery.
- Engineers and delivery teams can connect work to ideas where they are already collaborating.
- Creators spend less time manually maintaining links for others.
- Discovery and delivery stay in sync faster, making dependencies and delivery progress easier to see.
What’s changing?
- All contributors will be granted “Manage links” permissions, which mean they will be able to:
- Link JPD ideas to Jira delivery work items (Epics, Stories, Bugs, Tasks) from Jira Product Discovery.
- Link JPD ideas to other ideas in the space or across JPD spaces they have access to.
- Unlink items where they have the appropriate permissions across both spaces.
2. Permission name updated to “Manage links”:
In Space Settings and custom roles, we are renaming the existing “Manage delivery” permission to “Manage links” to better reflect its true capability across work item, roadmap item, and idea links.
What stays the same?
- Two-way permission checks for delivery linking remain secure. Linking requires the Contributor to have appropriate access on both sides:
- Access to the JPD space and permission to manage links.
- A valid Jira license and standard Jira issue-linking permissions (LINK_ISSUES) in the target Jira project.
2. Existing Jira-side linking remains available:
- Contributors who have the right Jira permissions can continue linking ideas and roadmap items from Jira, as they can today.
How to prepare
- Review your space settings: If any spaces require strict linking controls, create a custom role for users who should not be able to link after the update.
- Align your teams: Let your engineers, PMs, and delivery teams know they can keep linking Jira work to JPD ideas and roadmap items from Jira today, and will also be able to manage those links from JPD once this update is available.
- Ensure Jira permissions are set: Make sure Contributors who will link delivery tickets have the necessary “Link Issues” permission in their destination Jira projects.
