Atlassian leader Fernando Garcia Valenzuela shared a very practical and human approach to using AI to become, well, more human.
Fernando leads a 70+ person engineering organization across three time zones. As his team scaled, staying connected became much harder, not because work wasn't getting done, but because the subtle human touches can easily slip through the cracks when you're moving fast.
So instead of having AI write messages for him or automate empathy, he built it to review his own Slack communications and surface actionable feedback on his communication habits.
His AI “pit wall” helped catch things like:
- One-word acknowledgments that unintentionally came across as cold or dismissive
- Empty reassurance that lacked a clear, actionable next step
- Drops in warmth during especially hectic or stressful weeks
