Throwback Thursday: what Confluence or Jira feature do you miss? #TBT

Kristján Geir Mathiesen

The very first version of Jira was released in 2002. And the first version of Confluence on March 25, 2004. It has been over 22 years! All kinds of features, functions, and gizmos have come and gone in the last 22 years. Not to mention many acquisitions like GreenHopper, HipChat, Opsgenie, Halp, ThinkTilt, to mention a few.

Here is a fuzzy picture of Jira from c.a. 2002:

Soooo, what Confluence or Jira feature, functions, gizmo do you miss from the past?

Let’s make it a great Thursday!

Above all, the biggest transition of Server to DC and now to Cloud.

The Nostalgia: On-premise hosting (upgrades), manually tuning JVM heap sizes, managing database backups, integrations with other DevOps tool chains, mail handlers..

I miss the source view for a page. The old View Storage Format under Tools, where you could see exactly what a page was built from.

It was the browser's View Source, but for Confluence. When a page looked broken, you did not have to guess. You opened the source, found the stray table cell or the macro parameter with the typo, fixed it, and moved on. Copying a fiddly macro setup from one page to another was a copy-and-paste job.

The editor today looks much nicer. I still catch myself reaching for that menu entry that's no longer there.

So… I didn't even start with elementary school when Jira was first released 🫠

I also didn't actually use on-prem versions, so I've always had that 'cloud mentality' where you can say to follow

Evolve, adapt, thrive

mantra 😅

Thanks for the comments, all.

I still miss the old Confluence editor. It had more capabilities, and I also preferred the simpler Jira UI.

The newer interface feels a bit messy, especially for users who were already familiar with the old one.
