How does Rovo choose between multiple Agents?

Hi Community,

I was thinking about a scenario where an organization has several custom Rovo Agents, and more than one of them could potentially answer the same question.

How does Rovo decide which Agent should respond?

Does it automatically route the request based on the prompt or the Agent's description, or is there some prioritization happening behind the scenes?

Just curious to understand how Agent selection works when there's some overlap between their capabilities.

Agents are not automatically selected. Rovo Chat also doesn't have a list of Agents so it can't recommend any Agent to you.

If you chat to Rovo, you are using plain chat. If you need an Agent, you need to select the specific Agent yourself.

Workaround: Have an inventory of all Agents with descriptions on a Confluence page and create an Agent selector Agent that selects the right one. OR wait for Atlassian to provide an Agent API that lists all agents

The only scenario where Rovo selects the correct Agent is when working with Subagents. So you trigger the Main agent and that hands off the task to its subagents.

This is an interesting question and I am not sure so it will be great to see what others say.

Researching this I couldn't find anything on the exact decision making and in testing it didn't seem to even look at my agents.

For example, I have a Jira and Confluence guide agent, I just asked Rovo chat "Where can I find training recommendations for Jira?" and the response was correct, it gave me information from a Confluence page that has these training recommendations. But when I look into how it got there it just searched Confluence right away to see if I had a page for this and didn't check any agents, details below.

I also have an agent that is called Jira Space Analyzer, so I asked Rovo chat can you analyze my Jira space, then provided the name of my space to see if that would be a good hint hint, but Rovo completely ignored my agents again and just found the answer itself.

This is how I thought it worked also when I read your question, not saying it always ignores agents because I don't personally know, but in my short time testing it right now and reading how it got to the answers it didn't seem to check any rovo agent I have on every test.

One current nuance: Atlassian has now moved Rovo Chat itself to its newer Long Horizon reasoning architecture, replacing its older internal multi-agent routing system. That still does not mean Chat automatically selects your custom agents
