How can I use git-lfs on a local Windows remote server?

Hello everyone,

My firm uses Git on Windows and as people here don’t like command line, we use SourceTree as a graphic interface.

However we have a problem with large binary files and therefore we are looking for a solution to this problem. I see that git-lfs works with SourceTree, which is great because it would allow people not to use command lines.

But git-lfs needs projects to be on github.

Is it then possible to use git-lfs and make the large binary files copy on a local remote server (like G:// ) instead of github?

Or if you have any other Solutions for Windows than git-lfs for this problem of stocking large binary file on a local remote server I would take it!

Hi Theo,

If you wish to host your Git LFS objects on a local server then Bitbucket Server will provide what you are looking for: https://bitbucket.org/product/server

Bitbucket Server versions 4.3 and later include an embedded object store for LFS objects: https://confluence.atlassian.com/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=794364846 and Windows is a supported platform: https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/BitbucketServer/Supported+platforms

You can obtain an evaluation copy to see if it suits your needs.

Also be sure to use SourceTree for Windows v1.8 or later as it includes Git LFS support: https://www.sourcetreeapp.com/update/WindowsReleaseNotes.html

My answer referred to SrcTreeWin 1.7.x - I wrote "seems" as I haven't tried it myself, but this is reported in https://answers.atlassian.com/questions/35771155

After just updating (to the awful looking - IMHO) SrcTreeWin 1.8.0, support for LFS seems to be available within SrcTreeWin (just saw the menu item)

Just uploaded to SrcTreeWin 1.8.x too, a little disappointed by the new Skin, really used to the old one it seems.

I'm going to see if i can manage to make git-lfs to work and will come back for any furthers remarks or questions!

@Theo G: Hands off Srctree 1.8.0/1.8.1 as it has tons of bugs which make it nearly unusable ...

Just look here on this site for complaints and misbehaiviour of SourceTree 1.8
