JQL for filter to pull in epic and its children

Looking for help writing a couple of JQL queries to pull data into AR plans. I think there are a number of ways to do these queries. Looking for the simplest one that we can give to team members to replicate when they want to pull specific work in from other teams.

1) Pull in an epic and all of its children

2) Pull in an initiative and all of its children (epics, stories, subtasks, etc.)

Note that we are on Data Center so some of the custom JQL queries available in Cloud, such as "portfolioChildIssuesOf", are not available to us.

JQL doesn't have a nice way to do this out of the box, often you need something like Structure (app) or scriptrunner to do it.

In plans (AR) you can feed it several filters, so you can pass it a list of Epics (1 filter) and then a list of stories/tasks where epic-link/parent is not empty, OR 3rd a list where "epic link in (list)".  Once you have all the data+ more, it'll understand the relationships.

it's possible to get around the issue going forward, by using automation to label or otherwise edit tickets when they're attached to an epic or initiative, but it doesn't really help you at the moment. It's also a gross solution, and just clutters up your data with workarounds and noise.
