Setting custom Field value when adding a card

Question

Is there any way that we can set a custom field value at the time that a card is placed on the board?  Currently, I've

1) written a bit of code that will identify a custom field on a board by the name of the custom field (why isn't this an option via that API or am I missing something?)

2) Then go back through all of the cards that I have posted to the board and update the custom field value for each one.

It just seems pretty round-a-bout the way that I had to go about this.  I'm hoping (guessing) that I'm missing something when it comes to the way that Custom Fields work via the API because this just seems really convoluted to me.

Yeah, I love Butler but I was surprised to learn about the limitations that it has on the number of runs and overall operations.  For even a small team I was going to be running into the monthly limit very quickly.

@Rob Schaerer yep the custom field value API is pretty intense. You can access them via Butler though, for example:
