Turning Cards into Comments

Theres Duschlbauer January 3, 2020

Hi,

I was wondering if it is possible to turn a card into a comment of another card easily? With all the existing comments and such. And not just link them. I'm currently testing sendboard and would like to add created cards as comments to existing ones.

My workflow relies heavily on commenting cards.

I know about the "e-mail this card", but I am not sure if it can do what I need.

That's basically it, if you're wondering why I rely on comments:

While looking for powerups in trello and support on other sites I noticed that I may use trello a bit differently than others. So here's my workflow and the reason why I reliy on comments so much:

I am basically in charge of client support. I create designs for new clients and make changes for existing clients. Creating a board for each client would be an overkill, since the designs and changes are not that many.
Therefore, I create cards for each client on my board.

That's what it basically looks like. (small example board du to data stuff)
When I'm done with the changes, I move them to the "clients"-list. If I need that card again I simply use the search tool, open the card, comment the changes needed to be done and move the card to the list I need it in. That way, I can delegate work, have an overview on what has been done and give my boss a feedback about "problematic" clients within a few minutes.

I've tried other things to organize my workflow, but this is the easiest for me, especially since I'm managing over 1000 clients.

Some clients need occasional changes and I "log" their requests as comments. This gives me a great overview, since some call and ask about previous changes. Or some reply by phone and I need somewhere to keep track of the changes.

I'm trying out sendboard now, since I hope it would make it easier for me to "log" incomming mails to their corresponding clients. It would be nice though find a way add the emails to the corresponding cards.

I don't mind getting all the mails in one collumn and sorting them by hand, however it'd be nice if there was a way to turn them from a card into a comment.

Why I'm not using a CMS tool? I'd only need a few features of those tools, and therefore they are too expensive for my boss to buy.

Edit: Hit "publish" too early by accident

Hi Theres, Mark from SendBoard here.

I thought this was an interesting challenge, so I put together a suggestion using Butler. I'm not sure if it is exactly what you are looking for, but you might find it helpful.

What I did is create a new Card Button in Butler called "Save As Comment". When you click this button, it archives the current card, and saves a link to the archived card as a comment on another card.

The scenario below shows the following:

1. An email request was received from "Client A" and completed.
2. I attached the "Client A" history card to the email card.
3. I clicked the "Save As Comment" button.

You'll notice that Butler automates the following actions.

- The completed card is archived.
- A comment is added to the "Client A" card that includes a link to the archived card.
- The comment also includes the description from the archived card.
- As a bonus, the "Client A" card is moved to the top of the list so that recent activity is at the top.

Here is the button logic in Butler.

I hope you find this helpful. This is something that I think I'll be sharing with other SendBoard users, as it's quite a nice way to keep track of activity in Trello.

Thanks for posting the question!

Mark

yes, thank you :D

Might actually be better than what I had in mind, since the comments won't get as cluttered.

Hi @Theres Duschlbauer

I actually use the 'email for this card' option a lot! It's not perfect, and sometimes the formatting needs to be sorted out manually, but it's not bad.

I'm assuming you know how to find it? Just in case you don't, open the card, click share at the bottom and copy the 'email for this card' address and paste it into your email. I have a couple of cards where I email in regularly, and I've saved them as contacts e.g. TC Amazon Prime - this shows to me that it's a Trello Card (TC) and the subject of the card.

Let me know if I can help with anything else!

Esme :)

Hi Esme,

thank you for your answer. :)

If I could add a redirect for certain e-mail adresses to their corresponding cards, would be the best case scenario for me. E.g. clientA@example.at gets automatically forwarded to card "Client A", without telling the client to send it to the Trello account. But I guess I'm asking too much there.

For now I think I'll just link the senddesk cards to the Clients card manually. So I can "log" my process in one place.

Really hope there will be a more powerful e-mail or comment tool in the future. Opening existing cards and commenting them is incredibly useful for longterm or ongoing projects.

Edit: Tried to forward the mail from my client to the card, but it only forwards the last e-mail from the thread. Which is just my automated e-mail signature. :/
