New discounts on cloud apps for academic and community license holders

Hi community!

Atlassian has continually supported organizations that seek to do good in the world with free and discounted software throughout the years. We’re excited to announce that beginning this month, cloud quotes created or converted to academic or community licenses will have the following discounts automatically applied to any Marketplace cloud apps in the instance.

The discounts are as follows:

  • Academic institution: 50% discount

  • Charitable community: 75% discount

Marketplace already has community and academic discounts for our server apps and we’re excited to now make these discounts available for our cloud license holders. If you are an existing community or academic license holder on a monthly plan with a paid cloud app from the Atlassian Marketplace, there is no further action you need to take. Your cloud app discounts will be applied to your next billing cycle. If you are on an annual plan, when it comes time to renew your next license, please reach out to Atlassian to apply the discount to all apps for your next billing cycle.

If you’re looking to add more paid apps or Atlassian products to your instance, you can submit a request here.

Thank you for the update Emilee.

I do appreciate the 50% discount for academic institutions, but the total price difference between our current license (referred to as "Confluence (Server) Unlimited Users: Academic License") and a comparable number of users in the cloud or data center is still 6-8x more.

The Confluence (Server) Unlimited Users: Academic License covers everyone at my institution (around 36,000~).  Purchasing that amount in the cloud is far outside the range of budget possibilities.  We see about 7,000 users average per year, and with that amount in the cloud (or in data center), the cost is still extremely high to move from the current license to a new one.

So, while the 50% discount sounds nice, it actually results in us paying significantly more for both  Confluence as well as any plugins we have purchased.

Why the big jump in prices for academic institutions?
