smart value for custom field with a "dot" in the name?

Hi,

I have a custom field with a dot in the name "ext. id" which I want to refer to via a smart value, but when I specify {{issue.ext. id}} I don't get anything back, I guess due to the dot. I tried escaping {{issue.ext\. id}}, but this didn't help.

Can you help pls?
