restricting access of the admin features

I want to be able to let users do external system import with the Jira import Wizard but i dont want to allow them ability to adjust workflow or changed fields. How can i do this? it seems that the only way to restrict this is to change the role from Trusted to Basic but if they are trusted they can do the external import and anything with the workflow and if they are in the Basic role they cannot do either. is there a way to modify this or restrict in some other way?

Hi @Jon

There's a global setting called bulk change. You can get to it through the settings cog > system > global permissions

If you add the jira-software-users group then any user can import from csv via the 'create' menu.

I think to import from Trello, Jira Server/Cloud or JSON you'd need to give admin access so that they can access system jira import wizard.

Would that give you the functionality you are looking for?

hi stuart,

yeah what i see now is i  need to give a user admin access to use the system import wizard but when i do that i also give them access to other features i want to prohibit, i.e. changing workflow, adding fields or changing automations. Is there a way to do this?

Hi Jon,

No, my suggestion is not to give admin privileges. You can choose or create a group to give the 'bulk change' permission to - that gives them the ability to upload from a csv file or select multiple issues to edit at the same time.

Hi Stuart

Go to the Settings cog:

System

Then Global permissions:

And then grant the 'make bulk change' permission to a group that has the users in (jira-software-users is everyone).

i did that but i dont think it will work because to get to the external import tab you need access to settings to be able to  go to System where that option is located, so the only way is to give the users full access to setting. unless am i missing something? let me know what you find.

Hi @Jon ,

Yes, I meant to use the bulk upload through the 'create' issue menu:

Changing the global permissions for 'jira-software-users' group will give everyone access to this 'import issues' button so they can upload .csv files

noted. this is what we dont want cause to give them access to do this, they also get access to our workflows, automations, other settings.. i presume there is no way around this?

No Jon, you can assign this global permission to a group without assigning them as an administrator. They won't have access to edit workflows, automations, other settings

i think there is confusion. what you are suggesting will work if they are going to create new issues. but to modify issues they have to go through the system import wizard which is only available to users with access to all settings, you cannot just decide which settings they have access to.

Yes, maybe - I thought you wanted to import Jira issues from an external system but I'm not sure what your use case is if it's not to create new issues.

Unfortunately no, you can't choose which settings to give an admin access to. There are project specific permissions you can give, and global permissions you can give, but all or nothing for admin settings.

Sorry, I thought you might be hoping to let users upload from CSV without admin access.
