how to query and present two related objects's attribute in Jira

CyberSage June 15, 2021

I have two related objects A, and B (parent, child in jqjquery) and would like to present some attributes of both A and B in an UI or at least a jql query, like the logic below:

A.key, B.summary, B.status where A is parent of B

how can I do so with jqlquery or other means in Jira?

further more, I would like to present the result in a GUI gadget and it seems the out of box dashboard can not do it.

what plugins would you recommend for the GUI purpose?

thanks.

Hi @CyberSage ,

I think my answer is the same for your use case as I added for this question: https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-questions/JQL-query-help-with-Initiatives-and-subtasks/qaq-p/1725998#U1726028

You can't do nested/joined/cascading/subquery (or whatever else you might call this) queries out of the box.  You can do this through the REST API, but as I mentioned in my other comment, I brought Jira down doing it, so be careful.

Since you have Jira Server, you could certainly fetch this data from the database, but that doesn't help you display it in a native dashboard gadget, as you'd like to do.  What if you fetched the data and dumped it to another location that you linked to from your dashboard? I know, not pretty but it might be a possible/temporary solution.

Also, check the Atlassian Marketplace to see if someone has built something that would suit your specific needs.  See: https://marketplace.atlassian.com/search?hosting=server&query=jql  Lots of us could use more JQL abilities so something may exist or might be on the way in the future.

Good luck,
