how can I copy a set of epics?

Naritomo Miura June 16, 2020

Hi, I have a set of epics and I would like to copy the epics in same projects(but different starting date) All I can think of is the choices below.

・Clone epic one by one by using Epic clone App.(so tedious)

・Upgrade Jira into Premium(now Standard) and make Initiatives and copy(by some Apps?)

・make some automation rule to create epics automaticaly.

Do you have any other options?

You could export the existing Epics and related child issues to CSV, modify the date fields, and then import them to create a new set of issues with new dates.

Thank you for your comment. I tried it but somehow the CSV file dosen't contain the hierarchy structure like Epic - story -sub task. May be the way to export is wrong or my plan(Standard) dosen't have the future...

The hierarchy is annotated by the child issues of the Epic having the Epic Link field that identifies the parent epic, and the Sub-tasks having the Parent field identifying the parent issue.

Refer to this document

https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiracloud/importing-data-from-csv-776636762.html

...specifically the section on "Creating sub-tasks". The principle it describes is the same that you would apply to adding the child issues to the Epic, if you want to import the Epic, child Issues, and sub-tasks all at once. Or, you can import just the epic, get its Issue ID, add that to the Epic Link column for each child issue and import those. Then get the Issue ID for each of the issues that had sub-tasks and add that to the Parent column and import the sub-tasks.

With our cloud app Deep Clone for Jira you can bulk clone Epics and all its issues in one go. It's also possible to bulk edit the starting date while cloning.

Don't hesitate to get in touch with our support if you have questions or feedback about Deep Clone for Jira.

Thank you for letting me know the App. It looks good. I will try it if my boss accept to buy it :)

You could set up an Automation. One idea would be to use Labels as a condition. You could add a unique label, e.g. epic-copy then set up an automation To run manually or on a schedule and clone all epics with the label.

Thank you for your comment.
I made 2 epics and labeled "copy" then I run manually the rule to copy the labeled epics, but it copied only the epic that I trigger the rule. How can I change the focus to another epic? If you have any idea. please let me know.

To get your question seen by a wider audience, and considering that the original thread is three years old, you should start a new Question post. In it, include a link to this existing Question post if it is relevant to your scenario.

Additionally, if you are asking for help with an Automation Rule provide the following information:

1. Describe what you want to happen in your rule. What problem are you trying to solve?

2. Provide screen images of your rule and details of each step.

3. If the rule is not doing what you expect, provide the details from the rule execution Audit Log showing what did happen when the rule ran.
